Characteristics of the pear shaped diamond

September 6, 2010

Are you looking for a unique and catchy gift to make your beloved happy? We recommend our exquisite pear shaped brilliant diamond.

The pear shaped brilliant diamonds are based upon the fine traditional configuration of the round ‘brilliant’ diamond. Since pears may be used for engagement rings, dangles in earrings, suites in necklaces apart from being an integral part of custom designs, a wide array of shapes is considered desirable and suitable for them. A pear cut diamond has 58 facets as standard. However, it can be cut with varying numbers of pavilion mains – of 8, 7, 6 or 4 facets.

A hybrid cut, which combines the best of the round brilliant & the marquise, is shaped like a sparkling teardrop. A nice pear cut diamond is usually one that’s well cut with a polished girdle.

When it comes to pear shaped diamonds, the ratio of length-to-width is more a matter of taste and choice than other fancy shapes. We suggest that you look for a length-to-width ratio somewhere between 1.50 and 1.75:1 t o make a pear-shaped diamond even more pleasing to the eye.

You can look at some of the fabulous diamonds that will meet your requirements that we have on offer.

Cut is the key factor in choosing and rating a diamond

September 3, 2010
Tags: ,

When jewellers are asked to judge the quality of any cut diamond, they usually treat its ‘cut’ as the most vital parameter.
The way a diamond is or has been cut primarily depends on the following factors:

1.    Original shape of the rough stone
2.    Location of the inclusions & flaws to be eliminated
3.    Preservation of the weight
4.    Popularity of certain shapes

Do not confuse a diamond’s ‘cut’ with its ‘shape’. The later only denotes the diamond’s outward appearance.

There are certain criteria that help a diamond jeweller judge its quality. When a diamond has a high quality ‘cut’, light happens to enter through the table and travel toward the pavilion; it then reflects from one side to the other before it bounces back off the diamond’s table toward the viewer’s eye. That’s not the case with the ‘Shallow Cut’ & ‘Deep Cut’.

Features of Marquise Diamonds

September 1, 2010

One important feature of marquise diamonds, which attracts both buyers and collectors, is their shape.  The shape can maximise carat weight, thus making them appear much larger than they actually are.

The marquise cut diamond is a fascinating, fancy-shaped ‘brilliant-cut’ diamond that looks lovely set with pear-shaped or round side stones. The length of the magnificent marquise makes the wearer’s fingers look long and slender, adding to their appeal. However, while selecting a colour grade, consider the fact that colour may be only slightly visible in a lower colour marquise diamond’s corners.

The marquise cut is said to have been inspired by the infectious smile of the Marquise de Pompadour. The Sun King, France’s Louis XIV, who wanted a diamond to suit the smile, commissioned it. The marquise was one of the highly popular shapes in the 1960′s up to 1980′s.
Like the emerald cut, it’s a traditional shape. This is perhaps the fourth most popular shape after the round, princess and oval shape. The marquise cut is also known as the ‘navette’ shape. It looks like a long oval, which has been stretched to a point at either end.

Worst Ever Marriage Proposals

August 11, 2010

We often hear of brilliant and overstated marriage proposals which have gone fantastically well and the couple of sailed off into the sunset. What we do not hear so much about is the ones that are, how can I put it, not so good!

I am sure that most of the people reading this will all agree that proposing marriage is a pretty big deal, which is why I am equally as sure that you will find the feeble proposal attempts in this article both hilariously funny and downright shocking! Granted some of what you are about to read quite simply lack ambition, effort and romance, whilst others really make you question whether these people should be allowed to come into contact with other human beings, let alone be allowed into a church to get married.

Proposed In A Graveyard

Excluding a mortuary, I am sure that you will agree that no other place on earth “screams” death more than a graveyard; which is why I find this proposal attempt utterly abysmal!

A man took his girlfriend to a local graveyard one summer’s day to put flowers onto his deceased mothers’ grave, what his girlfriend did not realise was that her boyfriend also had an alternative motive for being there. Unknown to his girlfriend, this old romantic had visited the graveyard the previous day to purchase two new plots of land, next to his mothers’ grave, for him and his partner.

On arriving at the scene the man explained to his girlfriend that he had purchased the two plots of land and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her; he then proceeded to go down on one knee and ask her to marry him!

Now nobody can deny that he had put some effort into this, he had obviously spent quite a bit of time coming up with this ingenious? romantic?  Idea, but I am sure that when his girlfriend was a young girl growing up she had other, less morbid plans for the day that she be asked the most important question of her life.

Proposed In McDonald’s

If by some absolute miracle you are not familiar with McDonald’s, it is a fast food restaurant chain spanning the width of the globe and a place that does not really incorporate a “romantic feel”.

In 2008 a man proposed to his girlfriend whilst in the queue at McDonald’s, which turned out to be not one of his better ideas. His girlfriend was so disgusted by his thoughtless and pathetic proposal that she not only refused to marry him, she also left him!

Now although you may deem it a bit harsh that she said no and split up with her boyfriend, surely proposing in the queue at a fast food restaurant could only be “beaten” by proposing in a back street public toilet; neither is really declaring your love from the roof tops!

Proposed Drunk (And Forgot That He Was Engaged)

Alcohol and proposals quite simply do not mix; I would compare it to putting gravy on your cornflakes, something that you should never do! I am sure that it has happened many times in recent years, you have a few drinks, call your partner and tell them that you love them and that you should get married; this is just about forgivable!

In 2009 an offshore worker phoned his partner in the UK after a night out with his work colleagues as they have just gone back on shore ready to return home. Needless to say copious amounts of alcohol were consumed prior to this phone call, a phone call within which this old romantic had managed to slur the words “will you marry me” down the phone to his partner. Not realising how drunk her boyfriend really was, she happily accepted his proposal and was delighted when he told her to go looking at Engagement Rings and organise a family get together for when he returned home two days later. I think that you know where this is going…..

When our modern day Casanova returned to the UK he had no idea that his now fiancé was boasting a large Diamond Engagement Ring and an engagement party awaited him at home. Arriving at his residence he had no idea what the congratulations banners were all about; it was only after an hour or so that he realised what was going on! It wasn’t until after the wedding that the man admitted to his wife that he could not remember proposing, I think some credit is due for the fact that he actually went through with it!

Other Terrible Examples Of Proposals:

  • Proposing Via Text Message
  • Getting Your Girlfriends Name Wrong
  • Proposing Over The Phone
  • Being So Drunk That You Vomit Whilst Proposing
  • Putting The Engagement Ring In A Champaign Glass And Allowing Your Girlfriend To Swallow It.

The above are just a few examples of poor attempts at proposing marriage, methods which I would suggest staying clear of if you are planning on asking your girlfriend to marry you!

If marriage is on your mind, once you have determined how and when you are going to propose you then have to start thinking about Engagement Ring. Companies such as Quality Diamonds can offer expert advice to ensure that you choose the right ring for you; what they cannot do is propose for you, so make sure that you give it some thought before popping the question!

Carat – the measure of a diamonds weight

August 9, 2010
Tags:

Perhaps the most important of the four C’s, which determine and measure a diamond’s quality, is the carat. When shopping for an exclusive engagement ring, one quality that is invariably checked is the carat – the measure of a diamond’s weight. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams.

The short form ‘ct’ is used to denote carat. It indicates the weight of a single diamond. On other hand, the abbreviation ‘ct TW’ stands for carat total weight. It is used for expressing the total weight of multiple diamonds in a piece of jewellery. The total carat weight also includes the weight of side and accent stones. Adding a smaller centre stone as well as many side stones will result in a larger diamond carat weight (and obviously, a greater cost).

The weight of smaller diamonds is usually expressed as points, and not carats. There are 100 points in a carat, or each point equates 0.01 (one-hundredth, of a carat). To elaborate, 0.05 denotes five one-hundredths. So, a 0.05 carat diamond equates five points. 0.25 denotes twenty-five one-hundredths. So, a 0.25 carat diamond equates twenty-five points (one quarter of a carat).

When buying a ring, one should always ask about the total carat weight and compare the same to the carat weight of the center stone (typically the largest in the setting) to check its carat (weight).

Coloured Diamonds

July 30, 2010

Fancy coloured diamonds are the latest trend in today’s world of designer jewellery.

The availability of different colours is quite something. There are a few important facts to be considered when buying a fancy coloured diamond for your loved one or for yourself. It is critical to know the basic differences between naturally formed coloured diamonds and ones that are man-made.

Natural fancy coloured diamonds are rarer and hence more expensive. There are different ways in which coloured diamonds are formed by nature. For example, nitrogen can cause a diamond to have yellow or orange hues while boron can make it turn blue and with more pressure it can create a red, pink or purple hue. Natural radiation deep in the earth creates diamonds with colours of green or blue. Red, purple and green coloured diamonds are considered very rare.

There are methods to artificially change the colour of a diamond either with the application of thin films, coatings or through the combined application of high temperature and high pressure.

In today’s market jewellery designers are using fancy coloured diamonds to create different beautiful and unique designs.

Defining the clarity of a diamond

July 28, 2010

Considerations or criterion in grading the clarity of a diamond are the type, size as well as the location of inclusions. For example, inclusions on or near the surface may well weaken the diamond structurally, and hence tend to reduce or lessen its value.

On other hand, it may be quite possible to hide specific inclusions behind the setting of a diamond. This depends on where the inclusion is, thus minimising any negative practical impact arising out of it. It’s important to keep in mind the fact that a clarity rating is sometimes attained artificially. For example, ‘laser drilling’ involves using a laser for burning a hole to a coloured inclusion – followed by acid washing to wash off the colouring agent.

The clarity grade is the one after the treatment. It’s mostly considered permanent. Grades are issued for laser drilled diamonds. It is expected of vendors to disclose the usage of laser drilling.

Clarity may sometimes be enhanced by filling the fracture much akin to a car windshield crack treatment. Such diamonds are often termed ‘fracture filled diamonds’. This filling is also supposed to be disclosed. Reputable filling firms make use of filling agents that show a flash of colour, usually pink or orange, when observed closely. There’s a significant price discount for fracture-filled diamonds.
